Getting ready to fish...

Get your license

Before you head out to fish, you'll need to purchase a valid fishing license from the Government of Saskatchewan. You can get a license online or at local retailers. The regulations differ depending on the type of fish you want to catch, so make sure you're aware of specific limits and rules.

Choose your gear

A medium to medium-heavy rod is a good all-around option. It’s suitable for catching walleye, pike, and perch. If you’re targeting larger fish like lake trout, a heavy-duty rod will be needed. A spinning reel is the most common and versatile reel for fishing. If you're using heavier tackle, a baitcasting reel might be needed.

Time your trip

Spring and fall are the best times for fishing, as fish are more active. Walleye and pike are particularly active during these seasons. While summer fishing can still be good, the fish tend to move to deeper areas in the heat, making it necessary to fish in the early mornings or late evenings.

Find your honey hole

Lake Diefenbaker has several public boat launches where you can launch your boat. Popular launches are found near the towns of Elbow, Outlook, and near the Gardiner Dam. If you don’t have a boat, there are several spots around the lake including The North Shore, the area near the river arms, and Pelican Point.

Learn the tricks

Casting from shore or boat is the most common method on Lake Diefenbaker. For walleye, using a slow, steady retrieve with jigs or spinners is effective. Trolling can also be an effective method, especially for walleye, pike, and lake trout. Use a boat to drag lures through deeper waters.
